Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural support.
