Trump proclaims Europe to be weak, and by publicly highlighting the fissures between Washington and European capitals, he inadvertently aids Putin by further weakening European cohesion—while simultaneously denying any responsibility.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv amid persistent threats of American abandonment, the danger is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for ignoring his allies.

These developments demands a robust reaction from capitals across Europe. Although certain figures, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been forceful in their pushback, others—like British officials—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the U.S. administration.
