International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Recovery for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

A Red Cross official stated that its personnel accompanied Hamas officials into zones of the Gaza Strip still under Israeli military control to support the search for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Truce Terms and Captive Bodies Return

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on 10 October, the group is required to hand over the remains of all captives as soon as possible. In exchange, Israel has consented to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for every Israeli body returned.

Hamas has so far returned the remains of 15 of those held captive but zero in the past five days, as a portion of those remains are believed to be in locations past the ceasefire boundary designating Gaza’s ceasefire.

“At the request of the involved sides, the Red Cross accompanied a participant in the hostilities as the party looked for the remains of the deceased individuals past the military-established ‘yellow line’,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

The spokesperson added: “The parties to the conflict established the procedures of the operation and entrusted the ICRC to act as a impartial mediator. We was had no part in those negotiations.”

The search for the remains of Israeli hostages has become one of the most sensitive matters in the ceasefire reached between the two sides. Yet, the attempt to find the bodies has proved challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an approximate 60m tonnes of debris across the strip, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as missing, buried under the debris.

Conflicting Claims on Body Whereabouts

The group has stated it does not know the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its units that had been holding the hostages and were reportedly killed during military strikes.

In contrast, an official representative asserted that Hamas was aware of the whereabouts of the remains. “If Hamas exerted greater effort, they would be able to recover the remains of our captives,” the official said.
